World War II Scottish Soldier

An annual favorite at the San Antonio Highland Games (SAHGA) is the Scottish soldier living history display and demonstrations. 'Corporal' Philip Beekley, a SAHGA member and former resident of Brechin, Scotland, portrays a Scottish WW2 rifleman in the 79th Regiment (The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders), 4th Battalion, 51st Highland Division, of the British Expeditionary Force, during the period May-June, 1940, – in France, before Dunkirk.
This unit was captured by Germans while fighting a rear-guard action to protect the main force of the retreating British Army as it evacuated to England from the port of Dunkirk, France. Captured survivors spent the remainder of WW2 in German POW camps. In the 1940 action, the 51st Highland Division was the last British army unit to wear the uniform kilt in combat, and 'Corporal' Beekley honors this tradition with his WW2-era replica uniform, equipment, demonstrations, and informative display booth. In addition to the display, throughout the games, Corporal Beekley presents several scheduled on-stage demonstrations, explaining uniform and equipment details, and including live firing of blank ammunition in his British .303 caliber “Enfield” rifles. Part of the excitement is the participation of volunteers who assist in the rifle firing, and numerous kids scrambling for the empty brass cartridges. See the Games schedule for location and times of the demonstrations.
